Glossary: the terms this site uses, defined
One sentence per term, each linked to the page where the concept is explained or the number is published. Link to any entry directly with its anchor.
- Indexation rate
- The share of a directory's sampled listing pages that Google has indexed, published only once enough checks are on record; concept on the indexation page, numbers in the directories index.
- Dofollow link
- A link whose HTML carries no rel value asking search engines to discount it, so it can pass ranking signal; see followed links.
- Nofollow link
- A link marked rel="nofollow", which asks search engines not to count it for ranking; see followed links.
- Sponsored link
- A link marked rel="sponsored", declaring it was paid for; treated by search engines like nofollow, and one of the attributes we read on real listing pages.
- Directory backlink
- A link from a directory's listing page to a product's site, whose worth depends on the rel attribute and on whether the page is indexed.
- Listing
- One observed edge between a product and a directory, recorded with the page it was found on and first-seen and last-seen dates; the unit of a footprint.
- Liveness
- Whether a directory's listing pages respond to our crawler: alive, dead, blocking, or not verified yet when we have not looked; see listing liveness.
- Footprint
- Every directory listing we have observed for one product, with the history of each; see footprint.
- Visibility score
- How much of the available verified directory visibility a product has captured, withheld until enough rated directories list it; see visibility score.
- Directory rating
- A directory's score out of a hundred, computed from indexation, link value, reachability and corpus size as stated on the methodology page.
- Domain rating (DR)
- A third-party estimate of a domain's backlink strength, which we do not compute, verify, sort by or feed into any rating; we hold none today, so every DR field reads "Unknown" (what we do not measure).
- Claim
- Connecting a domain to an account by proving ownership and placing the badge, described on the claiming page.
- Badge
- The snippet a claimed product places on its home page, linking to its measurement page here; required for the free listing, as the claiming page discloses.
- Scan
- A free lookup of any domain against the index we already hold, described on the scanning page.
- Launch report
- The paid audit of one product against every tracked directory, described on the report page.
- Changelog
- The dated record of changes our crawler observed between verified snapshots, published at the changelog.
- Votes
- Upvotes from signed-in visitors on a product or a directory, labeled community opinion wherever they are shown and given their own view on the leaderboard; they never enter a measured number or a default sort.
- Comments
- Signed-in visitors' notes on a product or a directory, held to the same rule as votes: they are opinion, they are never editorial input, and they feed no published number (data and corrections).
- Operator reported
- The permanent label on a value a verified owner or directory operator wrote, published beside what our crawler read rather than replacing it; see data and corrections.
